Privacy at Movieo

What Movieo collects, what it’s used for, and the controls you have. This is the readable summary; the full policy is linked at the bottom.

What we collect

Account basics (email, username, avatar) when you sign in; your movie lists — seenlist, watchlist, blacklist and any lists you create; comments and discussions you write; and, only if you accept them, optional Google Analytics and PostHog cookies. Premium subscribers additionally have a taste profile: favorite genres, directors, and AI-generated insights derived from their own record.

What it’s used for

Running the service, generating personal recommendations, sending account notifications you’ve consented to, processing subscription payments through Stripe, and preventing abuse through rate limiting. Your lists are never sold and never shown publicly unless you publish them — every list is private by default.

Your controls

  • Export — download everything you have from account settings, any time.
  • Delete — remove your account from settings; personal data is anonymized.
  • Restrict — disable emails, keep lists private, and update your information whenever you like.

Third parties we work with

Google (sign-in; optional Analytics only after you accept it; advertising privacy tools on the homepage and public film pages for signed-out visitors while advertising is paused), PostHog (optional product analytics, only after you accept it), Stripe (payments), OpenAI and Anthropic (AI generation), Amazon SES (transactional email), Hexdump (error tracking), DigitalOcean Spaces and AWS S3 (file storage), and TMDB, IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic (movie metadata).

Movie Night for Two, specifically

When you enter a partner’s email, recommendations are generated only if that email belongs to a registered Movieo user with enough viewing data. The partner is never emailed or notified, and lookups are rate-limited to prevent enumeration.

How it’s protected

TLS on every connection, OAuth sign-in (no passwords stored), rate limiting, and role-based access controls.
