How Movieo recommendations work

No magic claims. This is what the recommendation system actually uses, what it can’t do, and how you steer it.

The signals

Recommendations reason from your own record on Movieo — nothing else:

  • Seenlist — what you’ve watched (and it is never recommended again).
  • Watchlist — what you’ve saved for later.
  • Blacklist — what you never want to see; excluded everywhere.
  • Ratings and reactions — dislikes, likes and superlikes teach it your taste, movie by movie.
  • Similar users — people whose lists overlap with yours contribute a discovery signal (Premium).

How a recommendation is made

  1. You ask, or Movieo generates. An ask can be plain words — “a thriller, but not horror, under two hours” — or an automatic batch.
  2. Candidates come from the catalog, in a query. Your request is parsed into concrete filters (runtime, decade, excluded genres, similarity seeds) and run against Movieo’s own database, with everything you’ve seen or hidden excluded up front.
  3. The AI ranks — it cannot invent. A language model orders those real candidates against your taste profile and writes a reason for each pick. It can only choose from the retrieved set, so it can never recommend a film that isn’t in the catalog, or one you’ve seen.
  4. Exclusion is enforced twice. Once when generating, and again when displaying — so even an older saved batch won’t re-offer a film you watched last week.

Calibration and feedback

New to the taste layer? Movieo asks you to rate ten well-known films — a two-minute calibration that gives it a first sketch of your taste. From then on every reaction to a pick (dislike, like, superlike) sharpens the next batch. To recalibrate, keep rating from the feed — recent signals carry real weight — and prune your lists: the profile follows the record. There’s a step-by-step guide.

The honest limits

  • It needs at least 100 seen movies before AI asks unlock — below that there isn’t enough signal to reason from.
  • A pick is a ranked suggestion with a stated reason, not a promise you’ll love it. When there’s a caveat, it says so.
  • It knows your Movieo record, not your mood tonight — that’s what the ask bar is for.
  • Taste tools (reports, roasts, posters) are generated entertainment grounded in your record; they’re insightful, not clinical.

Privacy, in one line

Your lists and reactions are processed to generate your recommendations and are never sold; the privacy page has the complete picture, including export and deletion.
