Gadon as the sheet-warming lady-in-waiting is given little to do but look naive and dumbstruck.

Like 'Game of Thrones' performed by badly programmed robots.

It's hectic, unsubtle, borderline cartoonish.

The Girl King really should have been an old-school epic full of palace plots, sword-plunging duels, fiery feminist polemic and bodice-ripping raunch. Sadly, it looks and feels more like a middlebrow TV miniseries, stagey in setting, flat in tone.

The film itself is a minor vehicle to deliver Buska's ferocious performance.
