Critics on Rotten Tomatoes
Top critics, in their words
An old-fashioned approach to the Staples story.
"Mavis!" is maybe too short and too plain, but it covers a lot of ground and contains a lot of great music. It's a fitting tribute to a true American original, belatedly getting her due.
The movie doesn't linger on the string of bad luck that derailed the younger Staples's promising solo-career opportunities, because she doesn't - she's too busy warming up for the next show.
Whether in church or on the concert stage, Staples remains indomitable, as scenes of her recent performances demonstrate.
